Have you ever wanted to check NTC & Ncell SIM ownership but had no idea where to start?
Most of us just use the number, recharge it, and move on. But here is the thing in Nepal today, your SIM card is more than just a phone number. It is linked to your bank account, your digital wallet like eSewa or Khalti, your broker account, and even the Nagarik App the official government app of Nepal. If the SIM is not registered in your name, things can go wrong and go wrong fast.
The good news? Checking your SIM ownership takes less than 30 seconds. Here is exactly how to do it.
Why Does SIM Ownership Even Matter?
A lot of people in Nepal are still using SIM cards that were bought by a parent, an older sibling, or a friend years ago. Back in the day, getting a SIM was a big deal lots of paperwork, long queues, and sometimes even money. So people just used whatever was available.
But times have changed. Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has made it mandatory for everyone to use a SIM registered in their own name. Using someone else’s SIM is actually illegal now.
And here is something very important that most people do not realise — the Nagarik App, which is the official digital identity app of the Government of Nepal, only works if your SIM is registered in your own name. If you are trying to log in to the Nagarik App using a SIM that belongs to your parents or anyone else, it simply will not work. The app verifies your identity against your SIM ownership. Government notifications, digital citizenship access, and other official services all go through this so having a SIM in your own name is not just convenient, it is necessary.
On top of that, services like mobile banking and digital wallets also verify your mobile number against your identity. If the name does not match, you can face access problems or even account blocks.
So it is always better to check first.

Method 2 — Nepal Telecom App

Method 3 — NTC Self-Care Portal
If you are on a computer or prefer a website, go to the NTC webiste and open the Self-Care Portal. Log in with your NTC number and password, and your account details including the registered name will appear on your dashboard.
How to Check Ncell SIM Ownership
Ncell users have just as easy options.
Method 1 — Dial a Code (Fastest)
Open your dialer and dial *9966# then press call. The registered owner’s name will appear on your screen right away.
Method 2 — Ncell App
Open the Ncell app and log in with your number. The registered owner’s name is displayed on the dashboard as soon as you log in.
Method 3 — Ncell Website
You can also visit the Ncell website, log in with your number, and check the owner name directly from your account dashboard.
What If the Name Is Not Yours?
Do not panic this is actually very common. Here is what to do.
For NTC: Visit your nearest NTC office and carry your own original citizenship ID, passport, or driving licence. The staff will also need the original ID document of the person the SIM is currently registered under. If that person cannot come in person, a photocopy of their original ID is also acceptable. The ownership will be transferred to your name once the documents are verified and matched.
For Ncell: Visit your nearest Ncell centre and bring your own original ID documents along. Similar to NTC, the current owner’s original ID or a photocopy of it will also be needed for verification. Once both documents are checked and matched, the staff will transfer the ownership to your name.
